only in ny #8: bark.

snack: bark dog
drink: foxon park iron brew

today, on the 56th anniversary of the date when the one-and-only oscar mayer met his maker, i'd like to take a moment to meditate with you on the topic of the gourmet hot dog. it's no secret that here in nyc, if you want to grab a hot dog topped with all sorts of crazy shizz, you have a plethora of choices. PLETHORA! there's crif dogs down in the village. there are f&b gudtfood locales on 23rd & 52nd. there's the traveling hot dog circus known as asiadog. the UWS fatty crab has a pork hot dog called the "fatty dog" on their snack menu. it's topped with pickled chili, pickled radish, cucumber & aioli and will set you back $12. yes. you read that correctly...$12 for a hot dog. therein lies my issue with gourmet hot dogs...they're so damn expensive. sure they're usually tasty & i'll sporadically buy a few, but i'd prefer that my hot dog doesn't cost more than a gallon of gas.

#178 - links & drinks 2010.

OMG peoples! it's no longer 2010! f that year, right? i'm sure this one's going to be nothing but ponies & peonies, but before i can move on & properly embrace this new & magical year, i need to do my best to help perpetuate the end-of-year top ten list phenomenon. last year, while i named my top ten snacks of the year (alongside my fave tracks), i failed by neglecting to share my favorite drinks of the year with y'all...totally unprofessional of me. this year, i learned from my mistakes & have decided to use it as an opportunity to start a new tradition.

basically, i decided that i needed to come up with a "best of" category that rhymed with "drinks" & was worth writing about. although there have been enough kinks to create a top ten list, that'd just be silly & while i've seen a number of memorable sinks over the past year (library bar, i'm looking at your graffiti-covered ass!), i didn't think i'd have a lot to say about the matter. in the end, i figured i had no better option than to go with "links."

after all, i do visit a number of food websites each & every day, so here's the BRAND NEW tradition: my favorite ten food sites of he year...my favorite ten drinks of the year...MY TOP TEN LINKS & DRINKS!!! OMG NEW EOY TRADITION!!! srsly tho, in NO PARTICULAR ORDER, these ten sites totally got my attention this year & in doing so, each gave me some form of inspiration that helped me keep this here documentation of my snacking & drinking afloat during what was an often-shite year. you should visit them too, punk! support food writing or die!

#174 - double fantasy.

i'm no beatles expert. that's for sure. i am pretty familiar with their music though. i first really heard the beatles when i was a pre-teen & found abbey road amongst a box of records my dad had in the basement. i fell in love & to this day, it's still my fave beatles album & possibly my fave album of all time. since then, i've heard everything they've ever done multiple times, but my beatles cd collection only consists of sgt peppers, the beatles 1967-1970 & the beatles anthology I. i know. i'm a slacker. maybe all that will change now that the beatles' music is on itunes. [insert chuckle here]. with that in mind, other than "imagine" & the other smash hits, i know next to nothing about john lennon's solo career. with today marking the 30th anniversary of the day when he was murdered here in NYC, i decided to mark the date by familiarizing myself with his first two solo albums--john lennon/plastic ono band & imagine--and his final album, double fantasy.

only in ny #5: brooklyn MAC.

snack: the carroll gardens MAC with bacon
drink: santa cruz organic orange mango sparkling beverage

i like to think that i'm on the cutting edge snackwise, someone who's got his eyes on the blogs & his belly full of unique & exciting foodstuffs. like, i knew that bacon was awesome WAY before it TOTALLY BLEW UP LADY GAGA STYLEE. a few weeks back, the village voice tipped me off to the upcoming opening of brooklyn MAC, a brand new restaurant in greenpoint that's focused on the good ol' american favorite, MAC & cheese. i totally missed out on the first nyc MAC & cheese wave when S'MAC opened up back in the summer of '06, so when brooklyn MAC finally opened up about a week back, i figured this was my chance to redeem myself.
