#101 - drrrty.

yr so drrrty! yeah, manhattan, i'm talking to you. don't act like you didn't hear me. i know you're leaps & bounds cleaner that you used to be, but there are still friggin' bags of trash everywhere all the time & inadequate trash cans on your streets & the S-M-O-G & FIFTEEN swine flu deaths. i swear i sucked in a radioactive gas & a tapeworm in times sq the other day. hey brooklyn! for the most part, you're cleaner than manhattan but i'm keeping an eye on you. don't think i haven't noticed all that dog poop on the park slope sidewalks.

when it comes to thinking about where i'd like to finally put down roots, i'm a wavering individual. i've lived in nyc for more than any other locale besides nh (sorry, boston) & love it here, but sometimes, the urbanness of the city really gets to me.  i can easily escape into prospect park if i want nature, but i don't know if i could buy some property & settle down here because i could never sit on my back porch & gaze off into the silence of the vast woods behind me.  as i get older, that might be integral toward keeping my sanity intact.

...but new york has so much cool crap going on all the time.  how could i leave that behind?  there's an abundance of bands & live shows here & speaking of dirty, i gave the new album by brooklyn's dirty projectors (bitte orca, which came out last week) a good listening to this weekend.  a few weeks ago, i finally gave their previous album, 2007's rise above (an album that's an attempt to recreate black flag's damaged without having heard it for fifteen years) a listen.  HATED IT.  this new album's good though.  the songs are a bit more structured but still have some obvious jangliness to them.  they bring the rock, so the kids can probably dig this a bit more than the previous album.

speaking of dirty...real dirty, can we talk about porn star sasha grey (NSFW) for a moment?  she stars as a call girl in steven soderbergh's new film, the girlfriend experience, so i've been coming across articles about her here & there.  rolling stone did an article on her entitled "the dirtiest girl in the world."  i read it over a series of trips to the can & the one thing that i can't shake from my head is the mention of her debut porn scene, where she asked her co-star to punch her in the stomach...basically, she's friggin' dirty.  she wants girls to know that it's OK to be a slut.  she reads neitschze & brecht.  she just turned 21 back in march.  now she's the star of the new soderbergh film.  i'm intrigued, so i probably have to see it, no matter how dirty it makes me feel.

snack: food should taste good jalapeno tortilla chips
drink: function: urban detox citrus prickly pear drink

since i believe that food should taste good, the other day, i picked up a bag of, um...food should taste good jalapeno tortilla chips, which were conveniently discounted at one of the better-than-average neighborhood supermarkets. based in needham heights (just outside boston), food should taste good is a brand started by some dude named pete lescoe back in 2006. his secret? he bakes the ingredients right into the chips. genius.

it makes for a really flavorful chip & they even have a little spicy kick to them, since there are jalapenos baked right in. they're the sort of tortilla chips that are just fine sans salsas & guacs & dips & whatnot. if that sounds yumtastic to you, they have a $1 off coupon on the website. all you have to do to get it is join their fan club. since all i do every weekday when i'm on the clock is work on fan clubs, i went for it & joined. to be honest, i'm not sure what it gets me other than a spot on the mailing list & this coupon...now i just need to find me a bag of the chocolate kind so i can redeem this puppy. tasty discounted chips rule!

after being in the city all week for work, i spent my weekend exclusively in brooklyn, but still needed to wash the city away, so with the chips, i cracked open a bottle of function: urban detox citrus prickly pear drink. it includes the "smog-scrubbing" super-antioxidant N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), which is apparently "designed to evict the free radicals hanging out in (my) lungs and sinuses." if there's one thing i loathe, it's free radicals in my respiratory system, especially them hippie greenwich village radicals.  they should lock em all up, i tell ya. scrub this city clean.

anyway, the urban detox is made with science!...& prickly pears! dangerously spiky tasty prickly pears!  get this...the prickly pear isn't a pear at all.  it's actually a cactus!  that's right.  i drank a cactus.  i'm not afraid to get down & dirty for the blog, drink a little cactus for my readers.  i'm crazy like that.  only in new york!

#89 - sweet romance.

last night, i was doing the internet chat with a certain friend in germany & she was looking for a romantic comedy to watch. eventually, she settled on marley & me, starring jennifer aniston, owen wilson & a naughty dog. personally, the closest i get to watching romantic comedies are films with michael cera or seth rogen. today, to avoid the rain falling outside, i checked out nick & norah's infinite playlist, starring cera & the sometimes hot kat dennings & an infinite playlist. ellen page was nowhere to be found.

as a supporter of all things indie rock & skewly arrested development-related, going in, the film could've had michael cera sitting around in his apartment with any cute girl listening to british sea power for ninety minutes & it would have been fine with me. over the past few years, i've been a big believer in indie rock as a great catalyst for bringing people together, so i'm a fan of the film's "dorky love through indie rock" approach. the indie rockness starts right up in the opening shot, which features a merge records (happy 20th anniversary!) sticker & a poster for a show at nyc's bowery ballroom. during the night, they visit all the indie joints--bowery, arlene's grocery, union pool (or "brooklyn pool" in the film). the opening credits play over a devendra banhart song...& then later devendra has one line as a customer in a deli, where he assures norah that she'd know if she'd had an orgasm. creepy.

the film weaves two plots together. the first revolves around a group of high school seniors, including nick (cera) & norah (dennings), trying to find the locale of a secret show by the fictional band where's fluffy?  this plot provides the backdrop for the main plot--nick & norah shedding their exes & falling in love over the course of a single evening. they argue a bit & say nerdy things to each other & get excited about bands & he has a handiwipe handy for her & she calls him "her musical soul mate except for all the cure" and they fall in love. that's the best kind of love! anyway, i enjoyed the film. you should too.

a few items of note...

near the beginning of the film, nick's band, "the jerk offs" are playing a show in the l.e.s. opening for bishop allen. since this gig is at arlene's grocery, we can assume that nobody got paid.

there are a few random cameos--seth meyers (as half of a horny couple who mistakes nick's yugo for a cab), andy samberg (as a scary homeless dude) & kevin corrigan (as a guy at port authority with a turkey sandwich).

favorite line i can identify with #1: "...nicky is definitely worth the underwire. he just needs a little push is all."

favorite line i can identify with #2: "look, other bands, they want to make it about sex or pain, but you know, the beatles, they had it all figured out, okay? "i want to hold your hand." the first single. it's effing brilliant, right?... that's what everybody wants, nicky. they don't want a twenty-four-hour hump sesh, they don't want to be married to you for a hundred years. they just want to hold your hand."

#89 - sweet romance.
snack: ike & sam's kickin' cayenne kettlecorn
drink: grown up soda dry cola

since nothing goes better with a movie than popcorn & a soda, i cracked open a bag of ike & sam's kickin' cayenne kettlecorn to munch on. it is hands down the best popcorn i've had this millennium. the individual pieces are fully popped & fluffy at times and at other times crunchy & sweet & salty all at once. the cayenne flavor's not too crazy, but it's there enough to give the popcorn a slight peppery taste, which goes well with the other prevailing taste, which is like a subtle, sweet caramel...not unlike every single character michael cera has ever played.

the popcorn's made by a company located down by avenue i here in brooklyn, which means i'm a selective locavore, right? it's trans fat & cholesterol free and made with only five ingredients--popcorn, corn oil, sugar, salt & cayenne pepper--which is an amazing feat given the wonderful taste. it's a good thing that it tastes as godlike as it does & that, as a result, i finished off the bag today, because it apparently expires on cinco de mayo.

tonight's beverage of choice is a grown up soda dry cola, made by a company based here in the city. even though i assume they don't have a bottling plant on 57th st, we'll call them local as well, especially since they've donated to both 826NYC & the madison square park conservancy. their cola's made with cola nut extract & like all their beverages is 100% natural, kosher & no-caffeine. no high fructose corn syrup in this bad boy...cane sugar all the way. i prefer the cane sugar sodas over the HFCS ones. it gives them a feel similar to that of fountain soda, even though it's bottled.

...so it turned out that my snack & drink choices tied in nicely with the film & just like with the film, they were both subtly sweet & not too "in my face."  when i was done with them, i felt satisfied & hopeful and the best part?  it was all done in a way that felt neither icky nor manufactured...how sickly perfect is that?

#86 - shawny shawn's day off.

to keep my sanity intact, every once in a while, especially during the non-holiday months, i take a friday off, relax, get some random errands/adult obligations done, etc. it's like ferris bueller's day off, but with less adventure & not in chicago. this friday was one of those days. i slept in for a few extra hours, waking up around 11am after a night where, with no work ahead of me, i had stayed out past my bedtime seeing the debut performance of the W.U.T.S. (who need to get some music on their page) at vox pop, a recently-saved community-owned bar/cafe/performance space/book store/publishing assistance place here in brooklyn...since i'll be back there, more to come on that awesome place at some point.

...so i woke up at 11 & started my day with an iced coffee & the paying off of some outstanding nj taxes. they were from two months from when i moved back to new york over two years ago, so it was sort of like a closing of that "coming back to ny" period, which i suppose is a good thing...sanity & all.

i also used the power of the internet to purchase a three-day pass to the mid-july pitchfork music festival out in chicago. very excited about that. i've never been to the festival & haven't been to chicago since a 2002ish trip, when i was there for a convention of college cable tv systems. all i remember of the city was a few hour journey into the city to meet a friend at a bar somewhat near where dillinger was shot. that's it though.

...so i finally left the apartment in the early afternoon for my usually bi-monthly supercuts haircut up in downtown brooklyn. usually i get the short, frumpy east-european looking woman or the slightly older, talkative woman who's been there forever, but this time, i got a cute, young girl with glasses & a pseudo-afro who fixed my hair. most satisfying haircut of the 09 thus far. you can smell it...spring is in the air.

after my haircut & a few errands, i came home & picked up my mail. to my surprise, there was a cd-shaped package for me in the mailbox, which contained a cd from allison, who you may remember from such places as snack away! #3 & wrestling entropy. in honor of my now-impending trip to chicago, it's a mix of songs about chicago or by chicago bands (including chicago) & it single-handedly made my weekend & got a solid listen over the last few days, especially with the subway waits due to copious mta construction. so yeah...spring is definitely in the air.

#86 - shawny shawn's day off.
snack: pretzel pete spicy-hot! sour cream & habanero pretzel nuggets
drink: rogue morimoto hazelnut signature ale

my friday evening plans consisted of the long-awaited return of the missing teens (the band i'm doing some managing for) as a full band, complete with guitarist & keyboardist, but it was 4pm & i had a few hours to kill, so i picked up a beer & some pretzels to munch on during my few hour-killing. the pretzels i went with are straight outta landsdale (pa)--the pretzel pete spicy-hot! sour cream & habanero pretzel nuggets. look at that pretzel pete! he's such a pretzel-hording lil scamp!

the pretzels come in a gold bag, which is totally classy. as the diagram on the back of the box points out, a lot of thought has gone into making these nuggets as tasty as can be. a wide split in the nugget & things like flakes of parsley make it all possible. they're good...no less dry than any other pretzel, but they're buttery & peppery/spicy, which is tasty. well done, lil pete.

luckily, i had picked up the rogue morimoto hazelnut signature ale to combat cotton mouth. rogue has recently rebranded their hazelnut brown nectar (featuring a communist-looking figure on the front) to the morimoto brand, featuring some sort of samurai. it's a well-done brown ale that's much more flavorful & not as harsh as a newcastle...not really something i see a communist drinking, to be honest, so i support the switch to the composed, asian stylee.

by the time i was done with its 22 oz & had a bit of pretzel pete coursing through my veins, i was good & ready for a full on rock & roll show. james call & erotic photo hunt (the missing teens mastermind's solo project) opened up, followed by full-on rock from psycho rainbow, who i had seen before but absolutely loved for the first time on friday night (check out "penny penny" & this rockin' live action & this stripped-down live action if you're so inclined). then the missing teens returned with a seriously awesome show & (i think) i got my video camera to work & (hopefully) taped the whole thing. i'm so happy they ditched the singer + ipod + couple of instruments approach in favor of a full band sound. it sounds so damn alive it's not even funny.  tons of people came out & rocked their faces off & peeps made some money! friday night melted into saturday morning with beers & conversation & this awesomeness.

part deux of weekend amazingness coming tomorrow! my life is so inspiring exciting! interesting neat full of events!

#76 - a long december-ists.

if there's one band i've been completely conflicted about (other than NIN, pearl jam & modest mouse), it's been the decemberists, who just (physically) released their fifth full-length, the hazards of love, this week. it's their 2nd full-length with capitol records, after the debut on hush records, which was re-released by kill rock stars, who then released their next two full-lengths & an EP before the band departed for capitol. a quick rundown of their works...

castaways & cutouts - this was their debut album & it was solid, which led to the much-deserved initial buzz & attention. as someone who at one point had dreamt i'd be an architect, i instantly loved the fact there's a song on the album called "here i dreamt i was an architect." there are other standout songs as well--"july, july," "odalisque"--& the songs are replete with the well-written instrumentation & story-filled lyrics that have become synonymous with the band.

her majesty the decemberists - i've always thought that their sophomore album (which is actually the shortest of their five full-lengths) drags on. unlike the rest of the albums, there are no songs on here that really stuck with me, although other folks really seem to enjoy songs like "billy liar" & "los angeles i'm yours."

the tain - this eighteen-minute five-part EP was recorded over four days & other than a few flourishes on the first two albums, was the first time we really got to hear the band's metal side, starting with the opening track.

picaresque - their third album starts off with "the infanta," a solid opener & features a handful of songs that both contribute to the overall feel of the album & stand alone well as songs--"the sporting life," "the bagman's gambit," "16 military wives." at the time, i felt like this was their most solid album from start to finish.

the crane wife - "the perfect crime no. 2," off of this album, might be my favorite booty-shaking decemberists song of all. it's got a discolike beat to it & i have this one positive memory of a cute girl quietly singing along to the chorus of it as it played on the radio of a van that was bringing a bunch of us back to the city after a daylong film shoot down in jersey. out of all their albums, this is the one i've gone back to the most, as it also includes opportunities to both sing along ("o valencia!") & rock out ("when the war came").

the singles series - near the end of 08, almost two years after the release of the crane wife & at a time when the band was still getting back into the swing of things after cancelling a tour & going on a short hiatus, they released this three-volume set of singles as the "always the bridesmaid" series. for me, the highlight is "valerie plame," a song about the former c.i.a. operative who was exposed by the bush administration after her husband's "what i didn't find in africa" piece in the ny times revealed holes/lies/exaggerations in their reasoning for invading iraq.

the hazards of love - from what i've heard via industry chatter, the path that they took leading up to this album (canceled tour, a colin meloy solo release, time off, the singles series) was the right choice. things weren't going in the right direction mentally. so now we have the new album. it's definitely the hardest-rocking of all their albums, which is more in tune with my current tastes, so currently, i'm digging it. at the same time, the album feels like one hour-long song, as the songs tend to blend into each other, so we'll see how long my love of the album lasts.

...so i continue to be conflicted about the decemberists. at times, i really get into their songs or find myself lost in the journey of one of their albums, with its suites & multi-part songs & ambitious storylines & whatnot, but sometimes, i just can't take it. i can't take it & colin meloy's voice becomes whiny & the songs become too sea-shantyish for my tastes & i end up wanting to find an accordion just so i can smash it against the wall.

#76 - a long december-ists.
snack: pringles onion blossom restaurant cravers
drink: belhaven twisted thistle i.p.a.

as i went back tonight & listened to the decemberists' catalog from beginning to end, hoping to eventually come at some sort of ultimate judgment/epiphany about them (an epiphany that never came), i snacked from a can of pringles onion blossom restaurant cravers. pringles, who in the past few years introduced "pringles select" flavors & "pringles stix" (an item i have yet to see), have recently come out with a number of "restaurant craver" flavors--onion blossom, mexican layered dip, cheesy fries, cheeseburger, slow cooked bbq, mozzarella sticks & marinara. some flavors have died off. some have survived.

the onion blossom flavored chips have a strange taste to them but they've managed to survive regardless.  also, as the can is of the "super stack" variety, it's so tall that it doesn't even fit in any of my plebian kitchen cabinets. i'm assuming that pringles is in cahoots with outback steakhouse & their infamous bloomin onion dish & as such, taste & convenience are secondary concerns.

the first thing you taste when eating these chips is a putrid & overpowering horseradish flavor that, once it eventually dissipates, leaves you with a faint, underwhelming onion taste. it's not in the least bit pleasant...i did use the word "putrid," after all.  still, since i'm a trooper, i kept eating them anyhow & discovered that by the tenth-or-so chip, my taste buds went into some sort of defense mode where, for their own good, they lied down & played dead, succumbing to the taste.

luckily i had beer to wash the taste away. in the spirit of "the hazards of love 1 (the prettiest whistles won't wrestle the thistles undone)," the 2nd single released off the hazards of love, i picked up a bottle of belhaven twisted thistle i.p.a.  given the name & label, i was sort of expecting a flowery taste, but nope. as far as i.p.a.s go, it's not really anything out of the ordinary, so if you're looking for a fun experience with this beer, the only way you're going to get it is to down a bottle quicklike & play a few rounds of "say twisted thistle tens times fast" with your friends. alcohol + words = awesome!

#50 - top ten stylee.

as we come to the end of 2008, we in the blogosphere are required, by law, to justify our existence by ranking things from the past year. this year, i've decided to bring two of my loves--music & snacking/drinking--together in ranked list form. i've sorted through hundreds of albums & snacks & drinks this year & these are the most memorable...enjoy.

my 10 fave albums of 2008
10 - the mae shi, hlllyh - this album is a late addition to the list. i didn't get around to hearing it until about a week ago & it's loud & obnoxious, which i tend to prefer more than quiet & breathy (fleet foxes can suck it). i guess, essentially, every album on this list can be described as "obnoxious" for one reason or another. they're from l.a. & they're on kill rock stars & although i can't speak to any of the mae shi's previous work, it's their third album & it's high energy & that makes me happy.

9 - jean grae, jeanius - non x-men jean grae will kick your ass. jeanius, her collaboration with 9th wonder, was finally officially released this july on taleb kweli's label, four years after it was first supposed to come out. until a few months ago when i checked out her whole discography at once, i'd never listened to jean grae. she's solid & she's brooklyn, so that rules. the album is available in four different covers that are recreations of classic hip-hop covers. that rules too...specifically the das efx one.

8 - amanda palmer, who killed amanda palmer - one of my former co-workers/internet friends manages ms amanda, so she introduced me to both the dresden dolls & amanda palmer this year. the album's her first solo effort & was produced with ben folds & right off the bat opens up with four really really solid songs. "runs in the family" is my favorite track from the album, but the video for "oasis" definitely takes the video cake. somebody honor that woman with a stupid astronaut statue!

7 - no age, nouns - this is the 2nd album (& the 2nd album in two years) from this l.a. band that comes from the same scene as the mae shi, so it's also the sort of album you can act all bouncy & head-banging to. there are number of really solid, fuzz-filled rocking 2-3 minute songs to choose from, but i'm partial toward the opening track, "miners" & track 9, "here should be my home." i even enjoy the few songs in the middle of the album where they allow you to catch your breath. good times.

6 - madlib, WLIB AM: king of the wigflip - although he's been around for a little bit now, i first discovered madlib this year, a year in which he put out three albums. for a few years now, i've been listening to j dilla (his now-deceased partner in crime) & they both have the same sort of style, with soulful sounds & choppy beats & samples, perfect for my short attention span. the other two albums he released this year are tributes to the late dilla, but this album is the final release in bbe's beat generation series--a series of records named for the spirit of the ginsbergs & kerouacs of 50 years past. the series has also produced releases from badasses like dilla, jazzy jeff, marley marl & pete rock and this album is also badass, a solid 64 minutes of goodness.

5 - los campesinos!, we are beautiful, we are doomed - uk accents make spastic music 10x better (see the sex pistols, hefner, the klaxons, the good arctic monkeys songs) and kick up the twee quotient & those are two of the reasons i instantly fell in love with los campesinos! & their gratuitous welsh exclamation point. a few months back, they toured with no age, so there's a clear theme here. they actually put out two albums this year--hold on now youngster (their february debut album) & we are beautiful... both are good, but this 2nd one definitely grabbed me more with tracks like the 2nd track on the album, "miserablia," which ends with what sounds like all seven band members belting out "shout at the world because the world doesn't love you. lower yourself because you know that you'll have to" over keyboards & whatnot...or the next song, the title song, which features the same belted-out style with the words "oh, we kid ourselves there's future in the fucking, but there is no fucking future"...says a lot about how 08 made me feel at times.

4 - deerhunter, microcastle/weird era cont. - this two-disc gem finally came out in october after very early leaks, first of microcastle & then of weird era cont., a disc that lead singer bradford cox was going to release as a surprise with microcastle until somebody discovered that the path to cox's mediafire folder was listed in his blog & weird era was just sitting in the folder for the taking & the surprise was over. anyway, no song got me as amp'd in the 08 as "nothing ever happened," off of microcastle. i often pop the song on in the morn when i'm dragging serious tail & it never fails to put a lil' up in my step. the song doesn't even appear until around the 23 minute mark of the album, but when it does appear, after three slow, dreamy songs, i feel like i've gone on some sort of journey by the time six minutes have passed & the song ends. bradford cox is definitely a weirdo, but these two albums have a definite poppiness in their weirdness & that's tantamount to earning the shawn parow seal of approval.

3 - why?, alopecia - this album is the third full-length from this berkeley hip-hop/indie rock dude/group & it was in heavy rotation for me this year. i'd say it's their strongest album thus far. it's dark & funny & full of crazy imagery & starts with the words "i'm not a ladies' man, i'm a landmine filming my own fake death." seriously, check out these lyrics from "the hollows" & try to tell me they're not some version of badass hipster-in-a-good-way poetry. in "these few presidents," there's a breakdown with the cute keyboards & the lyrics "even though i haven't seen you in years, yours is a funeral i'd fly to from anywhere." so yeah, if you like lyrics, you can't get much better than this album.

2 - islands, arm's way - i go back/forth/love/hate a lot with islands. they rub me the wrong way some times. subconsciously, it probably has something do with the abrupt rise & abrupt breakup of the unicorns, lead singer nick thornburn's former band. as i write this, i've been listening to arm's way a lot, so they're currently in the "love" category. the first five songs on this album are all among my most-listened to songs of the year, both individually (especially "creeper") and in a row...oh & they're the only canadian act on my 2008 list, so you know they have to be good, maybe even better than quebec's ms celine.

1 - jaguar love, take me to the sea - jaguar love is a portland, oregon band that, over the past year or so, formed from the ashes of two bands i quite enjoy--the blood brothers & pretty girls make graves. on this, their debut album, it starts off immediately with frantic keyboards & guitars & whiney/screamy vocals from lead singer johnny whitney, who is apparently all peta-beloved & vegan & junk. basically, if you're cool with his vocal style (there's a lot of robert plant in there), then you're cool with this album. the 2nd track on the album, "bats over the pacific ocean," is definitely one of my top three songs of the year. overall though, i get excited about & sing/scream along to pretty much every single song on take me to the sea & i say this with as little cynicism as possible, there are few albums from this year that i can say that about. yeah, 2008.

#50 - top ten stylee.

my 10 fave snacks of 2008
10 - corn nuts caliente mix (#11) - this snack was the one that taught me the compounding power of the google search, as my blog entry quickly became a top search for the words "corn nuts." nowadays, i get a lot of hits for the search term "32 boobs," many out of india & pakistan (see, they can agree on something), due to this entry. as a snack mix, it was definitely spicy & enjoyable & now i can die definitively saying that i've tried corn nuts.

9 - pringles extreme screamin' dill pickle (#16) - XTREME! seriously, use caution when around the dill pickle, an extremely ferocious foodstuff, a fact as clear as a cucumber who ended up on the wrong side of the tracks. the dill pickle thinks nothing of jumping out of a plane from 10,000 feet. the dill pickle loves it when ESPN becomes EXPN. the dill pickle invented the word "booyah." the dill pickle will jump over more cars than you. the dill pickle does its own stunts. this is why, as far as pringles go, the dill pickle is my flavor choice.

8 - zapp's spicy creole tomato spiked with tabasco potato chips (NEW) - last week, i picked up a bag of these at bierkraft, the neighborhood gourmet beers & cheeses & foods store. they come straight out of cajun country (louisiana) & when i transferred the full contents of the bag into my stomach a week ago, i kept the bag around in case i needed it for my end-of-year-list. i've been sniffing the bag's remaining tomato-tabasco scent ever since. the chips are in the kettle vain & cholesterol-free & my mouth is seriously watering right now. the bag claims that the website is fun, but there are too many shockwave errors on it for me to ever know the truth.

7 - limited edition wildly cherry m&ms (#14) - to date, these are the best m&ms i've tried, but although they were wild, they were a limited edition flash-in-the-pan and m&ms has recently come out with "premium" flavors--mocha! raspberry almond! mint chocolate!...& if you associate candy with sex & living the high life, the premiums website, hosted by sexy m&m ms. green, is right up your alley. in summary, i hope the cherry m&ms enjoyed their time in the spotlight.

6 - archer farms jalapeno savory pretzels (#44) - as i mentioned when i wrote about these, the flavor of these makes the general dryness of pretzels a non-issue. since then, i've tried the maui onion flavor & while they're also tasty, i've declared 2008 "the year of the hot & the spicy," so the jalapeno-flavored ones take top archer farm pretzel flavor honor. you might also say that 2008 is "the year of the hawaiian president," so the maui onion ones should take top honor. if you did say that, you would be contradicting me & this thing we have going on her is all about me & that's not fair to me, reader.

5 - archer farms dill pickle cashews (NEW) - i picked up an 11.5 oz jar of these at target when i was in nh for the holiday & they are already consumed, 90% by my hand. as the less-EXTREME second dill-flavored item on this list, it's obvious that i have a fondness for the dill weed. when paired with cashews & a 12-pack selection of blue moons & a full sunday of football on a day where i actually care about football, their fate became speedy inhalation by shawn & guests.

4 - smuckers uncrustables peanut butter & strawberry jam sandwich (#25) - i've gone back to the smuckers uncrustables well a number of times since first trying them back in september, switching off between the strawberry & grape ones. i refuse to try the grilled cheese one. even i have limits. holy crap! i just checked their website & they now have a peanut butter & honey one that's made with wheat bread! step aside jelly versions! there's a new sealed crustless sandwich in town! if you have time and/or interest, there's some interesting stuff that's gone on involving smuckers & the struggle for the patent for sealed crustless sandwiches...& once again, let me remind you that crispin glover loves both making sandwiches & the holiday season.

3 - lindt excellence chili dark chocolate bar (#27) - dark chocolate & i cemented our love in the 08 & the lindt chili bar topped the many bars i sampled throughout the year. like i said, this was the year of the hot & spicy and there's just something about the way that chili & chocolate taste together that i enjoy immensely. it's as simple as that. there were some other good chocolate bars i've tried throughout the year--the lindt pear & almond dark chocolate bar, the cherries & almonds dark chocolate bar from chocolove chocolate bars (came with this poem!), the frey pear & caramel chocolate bar--but the one i've gone back to the most is flavored with a lil bit of chili. spicy.

2 - utz red hot flavored potato chips (#1) - when it comes to me & the red hot chips, it's pretty simple--i've consumed more of them than any other snack this year. i've endured the occasional weak-flavor bag, the morns when i regretted eating a whole bag the eve before, the days when i had bought out all the local stores & couldn't find a bag anywhere and the economic downturn & its resulting shrinking bag size & rising price. through it all, they've helped me rekindle my friendship with the hot & the spicy. thank you, utz.

1 - blue diamond wasabi & soy sauce almonds (NEW) - i never really gave almonds their due until a few years back when i was living in watertown with jeff & he always used to have almonds around, so i tried them out. turns out i like eating them, sometimes a can at a time & with this rough economic climate, who has money for sushi? not me, brother, so i make up for it with lots of wasabi & soy sauce almonds and an active imagination. how good are deez nutz? well, there's this one guy in my office. for some reason, if you have a snack at your desk, he is comfortable with just walking up & helping himself to some. i mean, in the grand scheme of things, who cares, right? share & share alike. one day, when i had an open can of these at my desk, he came back to my desk for the sixth time because he loved them so much that he had already finished the first five handful of deez nutz, i had to start caring. i know they're addictive. it's nothing personal. so yeah, they're that good.

my 10 fave drinks of 2008

10 - cream-o-land dairy 1% milk (#22) - this makes the list just to prove how hardcore i am. if you can find me another 2008 top ten list that includes milk on it, i'll shake your hand. virtually. via coffee & cereal, i drank a lot of milk this year. just last week, i heard an interesting segment on npr's fresh air with food historian anne mendelson about milk & it wasn't in reference to the gus van sant film, which i still need to see. to be honest, hearing some woman talk about milk & its flavor & creaminess & whatnot was actually a bit creepy.

9 - gatorade fruit punch thirst quencher (NEW) - earlier this december, on a day when i had endured hours of vomiting & laying in bed dying of sickness, i made it to the closest bodega & put my faith in a 20 oz bottle of fruit punch gatorade, counting on it to replenish my electrolytes & save the day. when i started drinking it, it tasted like some godly beverage & i could truly envision that weird-colored effect on your body that happens when you drink gatorade as depicted in their commercials. fifteen minutes later, i puked it up, but for the fourteen minutes leading up to that point, it was the best beverage i had ever drank.

8 - porkslap pale ale (#7) - it's official. good beers in a can are the greatest invention since good beers in a bottle. in 2008, i definitely drank more canned beers than i have in recent years & luckily, a smaller percentage of them were bud lights than in past years. the porkslap pale ale, with its ginger & chocolate hints, is my favorite of butternuts beer & ale's four types of canned beers, making it my fave canned beer of the year.

7 - blueberry cobbler flavor new england coffee (#24) - this coffee pretty much single-handedly changed my mind about flavored coffees. i mean, it's not like i've started downing cup after cup of hazelnuts & french vanillas & whatnot since my couple-week obsession with all things flavored blueberry but whereas in the past i'd be all "get your flavor coffee out of my face before its aroma forces me to barf in it," now i can appreciate some flavor coffees.

6 - garnacha de fuego 2007 (#30) - i feel like this year represented a turning point for me & wine, largely due to the neighborhood wine shop. full disclosure: until some time last year, 90% of the wine i drank was white wine & 90% of the time that white wine was a chardonnay. it was SO fruity of me. i drink more reds now. the garnacha, from spain, was the best wine i tried this year whose name i can remember...& its flavor...spicy.

5 - schweppes dry grape ginger ale (#20) - so yeah, when i'm feeling guilty about my excessive caffeine intake but not my soda intake, this is my go-to beverage. as a youngster, i used to love mixing cranberry juice with ginger ale. it took into sometime in my adulthood for schweppes to catch up productwise & invent a version that eliminated the need for some assembly by the customer, but i don't hold it against them. i just drink my grape soda & enjoy the time saved.

4 - 4c white iced tea antioxidant blueberry flavor (#33) - this year, the 4c white tea supplanted the regular ol' lemon flavor as my 4c iced tea flavor of choice. it has antioxidants & those are good for me. they are also good for you. i've shared some moments with the white tea over the last few years, brought a suspicious-looking ziploc bag of it to my office so i could enjoy a cold glass of white iced tea while i check on mariah's website, mixed it with chardonnay at a picnic with friends on governor's island a few summers back...good times like that. good, refreshing times.

3 - archer farms blood orange italian soda (#46) - this is the 3rd entry by a target brand on this year's list. i mean, i like target & all and it's really nice of them to have that $1 section of crap right when you come in the front door, but 90% of my love for target is based on their food selection. the blood orange soda is a great example of what makes their food selection so appealing. they take a product, make sure it has an ingredient that sounds slightly exotic, put it in nice packaging, give it a price point that's not too high & watch the profits roll in. sounds tasty to me.

2 - mountain dew (NEW) - i drink a disgusting amount of mountain dew. often it's the regular neon green flavor but occasionally it's the code red version, once in a while, it's a voltage flavor & never ever ever is it the diet kind, which my mom always has in the house, a beverage remnant of the time when my brother & his TOTALLY LAME diabetes lived there. there's just something about the skew fruitiness of the flavor & its associated chemicals that makes my taste buds smile. it's probably the taste of diabetes.

1 - dogfish head 90 minute i.p.a. (#36) - recently, i've become non-hinckley-like obsessed with delaware's dogfish brewing co. & have tried the raison d'etre, the midas touch and the 60, 90 & 120 minute i.p.a.s. i've made the 90 minute i.p.a. my beer of choice as of late. it used to be that i was skeptical of i.p.a.s as a result of drinking too many of that overrated harpoon i.p.a. in college & beyond. this dogfish i.p.a. changed that. if i have my way, i'll take a vacation to the brewery & restaurant this summer, where i anticipate trying everything on tap. everything. i said it before & i'll say it again...who's with me? yeah, 2009.

EOY. til next year, over & out.
