a smorgasburg of pumpkins.

as i've mentioned a bunch of times in the past, three-quarters of the parow children now live in new york city, so we get together every once in a while. when we do, it's usually over food. last weekend, my doctor sister was celebrating her 35th 25th birthday so on a windy saturday the three of us & a few of the bro's pals met up in williamsburg at the god-awful hour of 11am to eat a bunch of food at brooklyn flea's smorgasburg market. it was the first time i'd returned to the market after visiting there for fucked in park slope back in may for its opening weekend. in preparation for our familial gathering, the bro had purchased three passes from gilt city that were each good for five entrees, a drink & a dessert, so we had some serious eating ahead of us. i, of course, was on the hunt for pumpktoberfest treats.

dunkin' pumpkin.

HAPPY PUMPKTOBERFEST, EVERYONE! that's right...for the third year running, eat!drink!snack! will be bringing out all the stops for the next month, treating the world to a 31-day blur of PUMPKIN & HORROR FILMS! IT'S THE MOST PUMPKTASTICAL TIME OF THE YEAR! in 2009, i paired sixteen different pumpkin beers with my top sixteen horror movies. last year, i paired thirteen (mostly new) pumpkin beers with a bunch of horror films that i'd never seen before.

in 2011, eat!drink!snack! is taking things to a whole new level. in addition to a bunch of new pumpkin beer-horror film pairings, this year we'll be shining the pumpktoberfest light on pumpkin beers, pumpkin drinks AND pumpkin snacks, with pumpkin-themed guest posts from some of my favorite bloggers, interviews with some of my favorite pumpkin beer brewers & purveyors and an all-around focus on all things pumpkin. IT'S GOING TO BE HOTTER THAN THE APOCALYPSE.

snackdown! - 7.25.11

happy monday everyone! it looks like the democrats & republicans down in d.c. haven't figured out what to do about the pesky debt ceiling. luckily, nfl owners & players have been able to get it together & agreed on a deal, meaning that there will be a football season come september. the only thing that could stop it now is if our elected officials can't reach an agreement about how to fix the debt issue & the economy goes spiraling into the ground, causing financial chaos that will result in the cancellation of the nfl season. that's right, americans. john boehner and/or harry reid want to take away your football.

it's been a week of chaos in the food world as well, with protests & recalls & insect addictions & life imitating art & a vegetarian lawsuit. are we going to hell in a handbasket? probably. will it be a tasty ride? probably. oh well...let's snackdown!

flea at laff #12: dough/thirstea.

snack: passionfruit with cocoa nibs donut
drink: kumquat lemon bubble tea

if you've been following along at home, you'll remember that back round the beginning of may i visited the brooklyn flea & had myself a tasty snack-drink combo from brooklyn bangers. if you haven't read said post yet, please click through & enhance my web traffic, you lazy cheapskate. anywho, i started that particular post by mentioning how i was a regular champion when it comes to sleeping in. a few weeks back, i went for the gold & after a friday evening where i'd stupidly stayed up til 3am watching episodes of workaholics, the following day i slept in until just before 3pm. it was epic but unfortunately, it also meant that if i wanted to head out to the flea, i had to get my ass in gear & head up to ft greene quicklike before the flea closed at 5pm.

dunkin’ donuts offers coupons as tim hortons lands in new york (link)
07.13.09 - bloomberg news - by laura myers

ladies & gentleman! yo bitchez! the NYC donut warz are totally on! in this corner we have the contender, hailing from oakville, ontario, the great white hope from the great white north--tim hortons! in our other corner, hailing from canton, massachusetts, the reigning donut champion of the working man & northeast US--dunkin donuts! that's right...in NYC, it's totally on, donutwise. bring it on, canada.

as bloomberg news reports, last friday, twelve NYC dunkin donuts franchises owned by the riese organization closed down, only to reopen yesterday as tim hortons, a milestone that brought the first tim hortons stores to new york city. this changeover included two major dunkin donuts locations--in penn station & times square. to combat this, dunkin donuts had street teams out & about in the city yesterday, handing out coupons near eight of the tim hortons locales.

if you're like me, you've never even heard of tim hortons, but it's apparently the largest food servicer in canada. now, the fast food chain is "pushing into the US fast-food market after closing about 15 locations in new england last year." i'm not the only one who hadn't heard of them. outside of the new tim hortons location on 50th & 7th, bloomberg spoke to bobby lauria, a project manager from barclays. he used to go to dunkin donuts "at least twice a day," and although he wasn't familiar with tim hortons, he had this to say about it..."looks appetizing." that's about all you can ask for from a donut shop.
